‘The Five Pillars of the 21st Century’ According to Charles Hoskinson

Blockchain and cryptocurrency expert Charles Hoskinson, CEO and founder of the blockchain research firm Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK) and creator of the blockchain platform Cardano, shares his insights on the five transformative technologies that will shape the 21st century.

In a recently broadcasted live video entitled “The Five Pillars of the 21st Century,”  the founder of Cardano and a co-founder and former CEO of Ethereum, two of the world’s most popular cryptocurrency networks, talks a “bit more philosophical” about the next hundred years of humanity.

According to Hoskinson, five technologies will define humanity’s future. The first on the list is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he describes as the biggest technology because it enables the extension of cognition to the point of having synthetic cognition at a global scale. Hoskinson notes:

There’s no way to beat AI. They won. Congratulations.

The second technology is Quantum Computing, which Hoskinson describes as a new computing model with significant computing capabilities that are currently impossible with classical computing. He states that together with AI, the two technologies have an amplifying effect and argues that AI would be better equipped to use quantum computers.

Third is Synthetic Biology, which Hoskinson defines as when someone starts using technology to manipulate and change organisms, like doing de-extinction. He explains that synthetic biology can be used in an extension or regulation direction.

Next is a very closely related topic that the press does not discuss much – Nanotechnology. For Hoskinson, nanotech is just as meaningful and has a huge connection to all other technologies. He explains that this technology allows building and changing any physical thing into a computer.

And lastly, to complete the list is Blockchain Technology. He believes “blockchain technology effectively creates the rules in the new world order.”

According to Hoskinson, the technologies in question are bound to significantly impact our future society, governed by either a “pyramid system” or a “horizontal system.” In the pyramid system, controlled by a select few unelected elites, “people at the top run everything and get total dominion and control.”

On the other hand, in the horizontal system led by blockchain technology, “everybody is equal, having the same rights and the same access to the system, with no one in control.” He says,

Through this (horizontal) system, the natural law can be turned into digital systems of human rights.
